In MFL we encourage students to develop their creativity by nurturing independent learning skills. Grammar is taught progressively and in context so that students are able to adapt and use language independently. Confidence in speaking is encouraged through classroom routines developing spontaneous speaking skills. Cultural awareness and understanding is fostered through letter exchanges with French and German schools, through our trips abroad in years 8, 10 and 12, and through creative and cultural projects such as the year 7 theatre visit and song contest, the year 8 French market at Petiteville, and the year 9 cookery project. Foreign film is an essential part of our curriculum at all key stages.
French and German are taught as options at KS4 and 5 as part of the curriculum following AQA courses, German is taught as a one year GCSE course to year 12, and Spanish is taught after school to GCSE as a 2 year course across year groups. Arabic and Mandarin Chinese have been taught recently as after school classes and there are plans to continue Arabic.
We aim to motivate and challenge students to engage fully with languages by using authentic materials, competitive games and firing students’ curiosity to ask questions. They develop their own identity by mastering foreign languages, widening their horizons and understanding different cultures.
